MIXED LEAGUE CUP FINAL

MATCHPLAY HOOTERS 461 (Sharron Mallard 69), Family Affair 447 (Jim Holmes 61);

Despite finishing at the foot of the table Matchplay Hooters defeated Family Affair in the final of the Mixed League Cup and prevented the latter from completing a League and Cup double. A 12 spare from Elaine Blick gave Family Affair a 9-pin first leg lead, however the eventual winners responded taking the next two legsm, with Sharron Mallard hitting a 9-spare and Jason Davis a 15-spare in the third leg, to move within 2-pins of their opponets. Family Affair then won the fourth leg by 6-pins to move 8-pins clear and it look like they would go on to win the trophy; however the eventual winners took the final four legs, with Dan Chapman hitting a 13-spare in the fifth leg and Sharron Mallard a 16-spare in the seventh leg, to win by 14-pins. For Matchplay Hotters Sharron Mallard was top scorer hitting 69; whilst Jim Holmes hit 61 for Family Affair, his score including an 11-spare.

NEW TEAM FOR MIXED LEAGUE

The Stroud Mixed League will commence with 8 teams and no byes after a new team asked to join the league. SBM's wil play out of Matchplay Club Alley 2 on a Monday night, and with no team opposite them it was easy enough to accomodate them.

With two teams joining the league everyone will compete in a full fixture list over 28 weeks, with one game a week and no byes; there wil be no cup competition this season.

It is planned to promote the league further over the forthcoming season, attempting to attract further teams, so the league fixtures are competed with teams playing each other once home and away rather than the current twice.

AGM REPORT NOW AVAILABLE

A report from the 2009-2010 Annual General Meeting, including copies of the Reports given by the League and Fixture Secretaries, and the Balance Sheet, are now available on line. For more details CLICK HERE.

NEW CONTACT NUMBER FOR THE VICTORIA INN

The Victoria Inn in Eastington is still open and trading, despite various rumours to the contrary; and now has a new contact numer. Would teams who are looking to hire the alley please contact Jackie on 07544 241153.

LEAGUE FIXTURES FOR SEASON 2010-2011 RELEASED

The Team Fixture Lists and Alley Fixtures for Season 2010-2011 have now been released and are available for Download from the website. No further changes are anticipated for the forthcoming season.

It was hoped that the league fixtures would have been made available earlier, however this season has been extremely complicated. The current situations regarding the Kings Head at Kings Stanley and Victoria Inn at Eastington have resulted in the need for teams’ numbers to be allocated for multiple alleys. Added to this are requests from teams, some of which are not always possible.

To clarify the position regarding the two pubs mentioned; the Kings Head at Kings Stanley is currently closed. A new Gas Meter was needs to be fitted and this appears to have been finally completed. According to the owners, Enterprise Inns, there is then approximately 4 weeks work for the pub to be brought up to standard. The pub is being advertised as available for tenancy, so should reopen; it might be available for the start of the season, however the fixture lists state an alternative alley for the teams who wish to play here.

The Victoria Inn at Eastington is currently open and trading, although as most people are aware it is up for sale and there is a planning application pending; however there have been objections to this. The current manager is leaving; however a new Manager is taking over. The teams which have specified this as their home alley will commence playing here, but have nominated alternative alleys. In all but one case I have been able to cater for this without major changes to the fixtures.

Teams who play at the Kings Head currently have their fixtures listed at multiple alleys, this will be updated once the position regarding the Kings Head becomes clear. Please note the date for the alternative venue may be different to the normal night specified; please check with your opponents on which alley they will be playing on.

FRONT PIN CUP DRAWS MADE

The draws for the first and second rounds of the Front Pin Cups have been made available; teams are welcome to commence arranging the fixtures; please visit the relevant pages under the Cup Competitions Menu for details. Contact details for your opponents can be found on the league website under the Team Information pages. If your team has a bye in the first round and your second round opponents are known please feel free to arrange the game.

LEAGUE INTRODUCES BRIAN FREAM MEMORIAL AWARDS

In recognition of his great service along with his enthusiasm and commitment to the Stroud and District Skittle League, the commitee have decided to present new awards in memory of Brian Fream

As Brian served all teams across all Sections, it was decided to introduce two awards; a Ladies Award and a Mens Award. These will be presented to the player who has recorded the greatest number of Top Scores for any single team* over the season.

Teams are invited to submit their players name if they consider they have qualified for this award.

* - The award is for a player who records the greatest number of top scores for a single team, if a player plays for more than one team they cannot add both sets of top scores together.

PRESENTATION EVENNING SET FOR FRIDAY 11th JUNE 2010

The Stroud and District Skittle League will be holding its Annual Dance and Presentation Evening on Friday 11th June 2010 in the Carol Embury Suite at Forest Green Rovers Football Club.

Entertainment on what plans to be an excellant evening will be provided by Overboard, our Residant Band from Hereford and Kelvin Chapman and the KC Disco.

Tickets for evening will be available from the League Secretary at the end of Season Competitions, you don't have to be a winner to attend.

This year we have some new awards to present. Along with the Mixed League, which there appears to be a growing interest, we have two new Trophies. These awards are the Brian Fream Memorial Award, and will be presented to the player who has recorded the highest number of top scores for their team. If you think a player in your team has recorded more top scores than anyone else in the league we would like to invite teams to submit their name; you can either phone or email the League Secretary.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING SET FOR TUESDAY 6th JULY 2010

The Annual General Meeting of the Stroud and District Skittle League will be held on Tuesday 6th July 2010 commencing at 7:30pm. The meeting wraps up the 2009-2010 Season and prepares the league for the forthcoming Season.

The meeting offers teams the opportunity to vote on any proposals which are put forward by the Committee or Member teams, and we wish to advise teams in Sections A-F theat a proposal has been put forward by a member team which, if passed will have a major impoact on these Sections. We therefore strongly advise teams to attend. Details of proposals will be published towards the end of the season.

As a result we are expecting an increase in the turnout, therefore we would like to invite teams to pre register their planned attendance. By doing so we can guage the numbers we anticipate turning up and therefore potentially review the venue for the meeting. To register please stroudskittles@aol.com or secretary@stroudskittles.co.uk. Your card will then be forwarded to your Result Secretary. NEW LOCATION FOR LATE SIGNING ON FORM LINK

A new link for the Late Signing on Form for Player Registrations has been set up, you wil now find the link located on the top left Vertical Menu on every page. Whilst the link still remains under the existing Contacts Menu, it was decided to add a new link in a more noticeable position as some teams have not been able to find the existing link.

Should you wish to sign on any new players simply click on the form, fill in the details and hit send, to inform the league. This acts as written confirmation for any new players, confirmation in writing is then no longer required.

MIXED LEAGUE GETS UNDER WAY

The Inaugural Stroud and District Mixed League commenced on Monday 14th September 2009, with the opening fixture played between Matchplay Newbies and Family Affair.

Matchplay Newbies

Family Affair

Reece Walworth became the first player to bowl, hitting a score of 7 for Matchplay Newbies. The first five players scored a total of 27, however Matt Upshall at number seven hit a 13-spare, which was followed up by a 15 spare by anchor Harley Daves, as Matchplay Newbies totalled 62. Steff Curtis set for Family Affair hitting a 6 in response. Chris Read followed up with a score of 5, and Steff Glowaski hit a 13-spare; however Family Affair were unable to match the total of the former, scoring 50 in their first leg, resulting in Matchplay Newbies taking the first points of the season.

Full details of the game will follow as soon as the final result is received.

NEW TEAM FOR MIXED LEAGUE

With a vacanciy having been created in the Mixed League after the Butchers Arms withdrew, the Stroud League Committee are pleased tp announce a replacement team; Matchplay Newbies. The team are based at Matchplay Snooker Club on Alley 4 and their home nights will be Fridays, they consist of new players who played in the Matchplay Summer League.

The team will slot straight into team number 4, taking up the Butchers Arms fixtures; we wish them good luck for the season.

BUTCHERS ARMS WITHDRAW FROM MIXED LEAGUE

The Butchers Arms have withdrawn from the Mixed League without bowling a ball due to a lack of response for players for the forthcoming season. Despite the setback the Inaugural Mixed League Season will commence with five teams. Attempts to gain a replacement team have not been successful; it was hoped that the Globe Sparklers, who have just withdrawn from Section D would take up the space.

A number of pubs have expressed an interest in joining the league, they did not realise that such a skittle league existed, so it is hoped that numbers will increase for season 2010-2011. The committee is therefore planning a campaign to attract teams during the forthcoming season, and consider it will be easier with the league running .

The fixture lists for the remaining teams have been updated accordingly

EMAIL RESULT SHEET FACILITY AVAILABLE FOR MIXED LEAGUE TEAMS

In an effort to ontinualy assist teams in the Stroud and District Skittle League, the league has introduced a facility whereby teams can scan their result cards and email the copy to the league.

This facility is currently available to Mixed League Teams only, however depending on its sucess it is hoped to expand this to Sections A-F and the Ladies Sections.

By emailling Result Sheets the League Result Secretary wil receive the Match Details earlier, allowing the Results and tables to be kept up to date. In addition discrepencies can be resolved earlier and quicker as a contact email address will be available. Teams will also benefit as they will save postage.

"STROUD MIXED LEAGUE" TO COMMENCE FOR SEASON 2009-2010

In response to the general interest and to aid those teams struggling for players, the Stroud and District Skittle League "Stroud Mixed League" will commence as of Season 2009-2010.

The aim of the league is to form a new Social Leauge which will provide an alternative to those teams who are struggling for players, as well as look to attract new teams to the League.

As a new league we have been able to look at the what we consider are the current issues and have decided to try a new format, which we hope will provide interest and encourage players to take up the game. The format chosen is as follows

Format - Mixed (teams to consist of a minimum of 1 Male and 1 Female player)
Number of Players - 8 / Number of Legs - 8
Playing format - Straight through / No Halves
Points System - Points Per Leg / 4 points for the game
Cup Competitions - None
Entrance Fee - £32.50

The league will initially commence with 6 teams, however if your team is interested in switching league for Season 2010-2011, or you would be keen to form a new team to join the league we would be happy to hear from you. Please contact the league Secretary, either by telephone or email at stroudskittles@aol.com for further details.

RESULT CARD ERRORS COULD COST YOUR TEAM POINTS

In the last few weeks there have been a number of result cards where the individual player totals and half totals do not agree; in some cases altering the match result. Where such errors are found the individual player score will be taken as correct. This could cost your team points. To alter results teams will incur a fine. To ensure your results are correct and your team does not incur a fine please ensure the scores on your card are correct and the half total adds up.

FIXTURE LIST NOW AVAILABLE ON LINE

In order to help teams members know their Stroud and District Skittle League Fixture a new facility has been made available on line.

The On Line Fixture List provides you with the dates for all your League fixtures for the current season, and can be accessed by simply clicking on your team name, either in the League Table, or the Team Number page. You can then Download or Print off your list as required.

The list is if your current fixtures as stated in your League Handbook, and does not take into account cancelled or re-arranged games.

In time I plan to add a few more features.

I would like to express my thanks to Pete Stump who provided with a great deal of assistance to set up these pages.

CHANGE OR DIE?

With the new season only a month old, already I'm aware that there are a number of teams who are struggling and have grave concerns that the Stroud League will go further into decline unless action is taken.

My own view is that the league needs to change the current format. Why does the league have seperate Mens and Ladies Sections; why not one open league? Is 10-players too many? Does playing two halves cause problems?

In the past 10-years the league has declined from 176 to 127 teams, a drop of 25%.

I am keen to optain the thoughts of team members, especially Captains and Secretaries, as they are the people who try to hold the team together. There is a Section on the League Message Board where you can post your thoughts and comments. Alternatevely I can be contacted by email through the Feedback Form.

I invite and urge all members of the league to post their views, as if nothing happens all I can see is that the league will eventually die.

LATE FINISHES A CAUSE FOR CONCERN

Although not a major problem in the Ladies sections (or at least as far as I'm aware), one of the biggest moans the Secretary receives during the season is the late finish of games, in particular in the Mens Sections. Games starting late have an effect, as does the speed and skill of the sticker; but the Secretary is of the view that the halftime break plays the biggest problem. With the growing trend in the Mens Sections for food it has resulted in what should be quick 5-minute break lasting around 20 minutes. This has a major effect on the time the game finishes. Teams are therefore asked to take this into consideration to aid an earlier finish to your games.

TEAMS REMINDED PLEASE FILL IN YOUR RESULT CARD CORRECTLY OR FACE A FINE

All Team Captains and Secretaries are reminded to check that they have completed their Result Cards correctly. The Fixture Secretary has again received a number of Cards where player names are incorrect (not signed on, missing or duplicated), and Incorrect totals due to the Individual Player scores and the Half total not agreeing. The Secretary and Fixture Secretary has received calls where teams claim their points are incorrect, and this is down to these errors. Where the Individual Player scores and Half Total do not add up the Individual player scores are taken as correct. Amending errors not only costs the league money, your money, (phone calls, letters etc.), it also causes the Fixture Secretary inconvenience. It is the responsibility of EACH team to ensure their half of the Result Card is completed correctly, and where errors occur fines are being issued. I would also like to remind Home teams to ensure they pass the Result Card to the Away team at the earliest possible opportunity - and no later than the end of the first half.

The solution to the problem is simple and makes the running of the league easier and smoother, 'PLEASE ENSURE YOUR RESULT CARD IS FILLED IN CORRECTLY'.

FEEDBACK WANTED

Something that the Stroud League receive very little of is Feedback regarding the league. We often hear of problems second or third hand, and as a course it is impossible to take any action. I am extremely keen for team members to provide me with feedback on their views regarding the league, this can be done by using the Feedback Form, for which the link can be found on the left hand side of the menu, by email to stroudskittles@aol.com or by post. Alternatevely you can post a message on the League Message Board and obtain other teams views.

Without feedback it is difficult to judge what teams want from the league.
